'... As with film composition, record production is not about compromise - it's about opportunity. When I think about my time with the artists you're about to meet, I don't think in terms of privilege - I think in terms of joy. The worst moment I experienced on any of these recordings was terrific.
With a few exceptions, I am not the artist on the titles in this catalog. I authored the smallest fraction of these recordings, and rarely played on a cut. For the most part, I was the producer: a cross between the Wizard of Oz and a den mother. It often involves a lot of smoke and mirrors, but mostly it's about trying not to scold and serving treats.
This label started as a vanity outlet for some soundtracks I had done with John Sayles. I then branched out into record production for singer- songwriters; after a few years, things got out of hand. I met a number of artists through my film soundtracks that I believed were worthy of special attention. Butch Thompson played on "Eight Men al Out" and Duke Levine first performed on "City of Hope" and "Passion Fish"; here were two artists that deserved their own forums. Billy Novick has been a constant collaborator and friend on more films than I can count, and Guy Van Duser has bailed me out on guitar over and over through the years. It took me forever to get the two of them to record for my label. It was worth the wait.
This year sees my first record with Bob Franke (why did I wait so long?); and my latest effort with Jeanie Stahl, who somehow manages to remind the rest of us that, when it comes to singing, we're mere mortals.
DAVE SHACTER
has been with me for a couple of years now, serving as recording engineer and more recently as producer; no doubt against the advice of his accountant, shrink, friends, and better half. This whole thing was his idea, so blame him. I can't for the life of me figure out why he's still here.
Maybe it's because it puts food on the table; we get to spend time with absolutely wonderful people; and every now and then someone tells us it makes a difference in their day.
On top of which, we get to listen to a lot of great music.'
